Feedburner is one of the free to use web feed management system. Most of the blogs are using this technology because of the reason its free. I am not able to think off a blog without feedburner and it helps to keep hold of your readers for the long term through email relation. It is one of the easiest way to ping all your subscribers as soon as you publish a blog post and it brings them back to your blog.
Feedburner originally co-founder by Twitter’s CEO Costolo and later acquired by Google. In reality there are not much features in Feedburner and I believe Google had not improved it. They are also planning to shutdown Feedburners API support for the developers by Oct’ 2012.
I used to watch the subscriber growth every 15-days or once in a month, today morning I got shocked seeing that my subscriber count went down to ZERO. Yes, it is ‘0’ from more than 3300+ subscribers. It almost took 2 years (on slow phase) to build this huge list and suddenly today it all went down to zero. Later I understood that its a technical fault from Feedburner’s side and they have posted a short update on their official blog here as follows:
Issue: We have been encountering difficulties with our stats production pipeline for data representing Sept 19th and 20th, 2012. We are currently working to resolve the issue.
Lets hope everything comes back to normal…
The lesson: You must take regular backup of your subscribers. There is an option from the feedburner dashboard: go to Feed Stats -> Export: Excel . CSV and you can take a copy of all your subscribers as an excel sheet.
Alternatively, you can always use the premium Aweber E-Mail marketing software as an alternative to feedburner that has many more advanced features with better interface than feedburner. Currently, I am using Aweber for my product site to deliver downloads however, i am also planning to move into Aweber for subscribers management also.
At least, we can balance the risk between Feedburner and Aweber instead of relying on a single system.
